ART AND DESIGN

‘Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.’ Isaiah 64:8

Art and Design education stimulates creativity and imagination whilst giving children opportunities to develop as thinking, caring and creative individuals. We encourage children to be inspired by the work of great artists, engage in a wide range of resources and media, to be inventive and creative. We develop critical thinking making links with art to other areas of the curriculum and the contribution it makes on culture, faith and the world around us.

 

COMPUTING

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Primary school, we are committed to equipping every child with the ICT skills that they need, to communicate with and engage confidently with the modern world. We adopt an inter-curricular approach, so that children can apply the breadth of their learning through the medium of information technology. We aim to give children the creative skills not just to solve problems, but also to be able to communicate their understanding through use of imagination, logic and reason.  

 

GEOGRAPHY

‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.’ Genesis 1:1

Through the teaching of Geography, pupils are inspired to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world around them. They develop an understanding of its people, places and environments and the interactions and inequalities that occur both between and within these. 

 

HISTORY

‘For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.’ Romans 15:4

Through the teaching of history, pupils become inquisitive about the world they live in. They develop a knowledge about people and events in the past and explore the process of change, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups, which leads them towards an understanding of their own identity, and the world they live in today.

 

 

MATHEMATICS

Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.’ Psalm 90:12 

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Primary school we are passionate about mathematics teaching and learning. We are a Maths Mastery school and as such share their core belief that “we want every child to succeed in maths, no matter what their background and starting point.” We aim to give children the skills not just to solve problems, but also, to be able to communicate their understanding using mathematical language, and approach problems with logic and reason. As a school, we aim to ensure that all children have confidence in mathematics.

 

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE

‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’ ACTS 2: 1 -5

The main aims of the MFL curriculum at St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s are:

  • to foster an interest and positive attitude towards learning other languages;
  • to help children to explore and develop an awareness of cultural differences and respect these;
  • to lay the foundations for future study beyond Primary School.

 

MUSIC

‘He (Jesus) said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”’ Mark 10:14-15

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Primary school we believe in the unique child; we want every child to come to Jesus in their own unique way.  Music has the capacity to allow children freedom to flourish in a creative environment; every child has the right to find what they succeed in and develop those skills. Music in our school develops child confidence and during assemblies, these skills are encouraged in all. Access to teaching delivered by music specialists allows children to develop more technical knowledge and skills and to take part in concerts and events with children from other schools.

 

PE & GAMES

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s we believe Physical Education is about offering every child the opportunity to achieve, thrive, compete and support their general health, fitness and wellbeing. Children should be given the opportunities to compete in sport in both inter and intra competitions as well as other activities which instil core values such as respect and team work. 

 

PSHE

‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.’ Matthew 5:3-12

The school recognises that for our children to succeed and contribute positively to life in modern Britain as adults, their understanding and awareness of spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues are vital.  We believe that the catholic ethos and gospel values in our school promote this understanding and awareness.  We aim to teach children to become creative, responsible, positive individuals who will fulfil their potential by us teaching programmes addressing specific issues e.g. bullying, citizenship and relationships.

 

READING

‘In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,’ Ephesians 3:4-5

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School we believe that competence in reading allows a child to flourish in all other areas of the curriculum. We believe that a solid foundation in reading at an early age gives children the skills and confidence to explore academically and take the lead in their own education. Reading allows children to access stories and teachings from the Bible, to understand the teachings of Jesus and gives them the vocabulary to reflect inwardly on their own emotional and spiritual life. With these skills, children can then look out at the world and develop a dialogue with those around them.

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s, we want all our children to care for the world that God created. We will teach our children to learn to respect the world around them, ask scientific questions and develop a sense of wonder.

 

WRITING AND ORACY

At St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Primary school, we are passionate about Literacy and learning. We subscribe to the Literacy and Language holistic programme for teaching English, which is designed to stimulate and challenge children’s thinking and create enthusiastic life-long readers and writers. As a school, our aim is to develop each student’s confidence and independence, regardless of their background and academic ability, to communicate effectively with others through outstanding speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through the development of these vital skills, we hope to equip them for the next stage in their school journey.
